Teachers

 



Laura Hazelwood has over 30 years of dance experience. She has trained in tap, ballet, pointe, jazz, modern, hip-hop, acrobatics, and competitive gymnastics. She began her training at Joy Johnson’s Studio in Owensboro, Kentucky where she took classes in tap, ballet, and acrobatics. She then moved to Vicki’s School of Dance to take classes in ballet, baton, and acrobatics. For the next several years she was a member of a competitive gymnastics team, where she won the state balance beam title. She began training on pointe at age 11 and became a member of the company at age 13. She then returned to Johnson’s studio to continue training in ballet, pointe, and jazz. She was a member of her high school and college dance teams. In college, she continued her dance education, taking classes in gymnastics, modern dance, and performing with the EKU Dance Theater. After college she began taking classes in tap and jazz at the Lexington Tap and Jazz Company where she also taught hip-hop classes. She also trained at the Dancer’s Studio in ballet and pointe. She is a certified member of Dance Educators of America. She has also received certification in two of the three levels through the Dance Educators of America in classical ballet, tap, jazz, modern, and acrobatics, where she received one of the highest scores in her class. She has coached several award winning dance teams and has experience choreographing in many styles of dance.

 

Laura started the school in the summer of 2000 teaching tap, ballet, and jazz for ages 3 and up. The school now enrolls over 300 students, has a staff of 10, and offers classes in hip-hop, lyrical, and company classes in addition to tap, ballet, pointe, and jazz.

 

 

Emily Roe has been dancing for 22 years. She has been trained in baller, pointe, tap, jazz, lyrical, modern, Hawaiian, and Tahitian. She has danced at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and at the American Academy of Ballet in New York. She began teaching with Laura in 2007.

 
 

Allison Sernulka has 16 years of dance experience. She has had training in tap, ballet, jazz, lyrical, modern, lyrical, hip hop, pointe. She has also been a part of a nationally competitive dance team and has performed with the EKU dance theater. Allison was also selected to be a dance teacher at the Music, Art, and Drama camp for KY in the summer of 2007. She has been training with Laura since the summer of 2001. Allison joined our team in 2003 as a pre-dance and level one instructor at the school. Since then her role has expanded significantly.  She now teaches each of our different dance types at all levels.

 

 

Havanna Hagans has 9 years of dance experience. She was member of the EKU dance theater, where she won the Newcomer award in 2004 and a dance scholarship in 2005. She has experience in many different styles of choreography, including, hip hop, modern, African, pom, and pagent dances. She has won several awards both as a choreographer and as a dancer. Havanna joined our team in 2006.

 

Kashara Garrett has 16 years of tumbling and competitive cheerleading experience of which she was a member of the nationally competitive Cheer Cats Allstars of Irvine, KY. There she is Co-Owner of Andy’s Gymnastics and coaches multiple cheer and dance squads. She also has 3 years of dance experience, all of which has been at Laura’s School of Dance, where she trained in ballet, pointe, jazz, lyrical, and tap. She is currently a member of the EKU Dance Team under the instruction of Laura Hazelwood. KaShara has been teaching at the studio since 2009.

 

Alex Spangler has 13 years of dance training in jazz, hip-hop, ballet, lyrical/modern, and tap. She danced in middle school, a nationally ranked high school, and is currently a member of the EKU Dance team. Alex was a member of the company and Nationals team at Step-N-Out Dance Studio in Louisville, KY. She competed in numerous competitions of which her teams won National Champions at Star Systems Nationals 2 years in a row. She has participated in workshops in New York City, Nashville, and Cincinnati. Alex has been teaching at the studio since 2009.

 

Tilly Jones has had 10 years of dance training in tap, ballet, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, and pointe. She began dancing at Laura’s School of Dance at the age of 7. She was a member of the Richmond All-Star Dance Company for 6 years. During this time, Tilly competed nationally and regionally with group pieces, solos, and a duet. Tilly has been a teacher’s aide for 2 years. Tilly has helped coach one group for the Company. Tilly has been teaching at the studio since 2009.

 

Tammi Whittemore has been with Laura since 2004. She manages the dance apparel store, takes care of registration, is the studio office manager, and a multitude of other tasks that make the studio run smoothly. She also teaches several pre-dance classes. Tammi has had several years of dance training as well as experience coaching dance teams.

 

Stacy Jones helps to run the store and office. Stacey joined our team in 2009.
